The Electronic Systems Professional Alliance (ESPA) will offer its new one-day review course and certification exam at the Electronic House Expo in Orlando, Florida, this March.  The ESPA Certified-EST® tests an electronic systems technician (EST) candidate's understanding of industry basics and is a true indicator of whether or not the technician is prepared for an electronic systems career.

As part of the Custom Electronics Designer & Installation Association (CEDIA) University track, the ESPA Certified-EST® review course will be held Saturday, March 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The two-hour exam begins that same day at 3:30 p.m. or may be taken at a later date.  Both are at the Orlando Convention Center. The one-day review course is aimed at currently employed ESTs that need a refresher to help pass the certification exam.

“In our industry-first-ever survey of electronic systems technicians last month, we found that training opportunities were cited by 69 percent of technicians as somewhat or very important to their job satisfaction,” said Grant Mydland, executive director of ESPA.  “In fact, 62 percent of technicians said they think that low-voltage certification should be required for their work.  This is a clear call by the industry that certification is critical for career success.”

The ESPA Certified-EST® is aimed at the entry-level technician, providing a set of fundamental best practices common across all tech markets – structured wiring, distributed audio and video, satellite, theater rooms, lighting, security and life safety systems and automation controls. Because ESPA is open to any and all electronics organizations, it has the potential to become the common denominator for workers seeking technical careers. 

“In 2009, we are focusing on currently employed ESTs that have never been certified.  We want ESTs to make sure they get on the right track with their certifications to ensure they have all the core skills, are prepared to learn new skills, can control their own future, and help employers and consumers reap the benefits of a highly trained and productive workforce,” added Mydland.  After achieving ESPA Certified-EST® certification, technicians can get help from ESPA to pursue jobs and advanced training based on the industry vertical that appeals to them.
